3rd edition of CUISINE TA VILLE: LE GRAND VOYAGE
A trail of masterful installations and outdoor exhibits AND virtual programming featuring films, culinary encounters, conferences and workshops that explore the notions of Journey and Grief as they relate to migratory issues.
CUISINE TA VILLE, LE GRAND VOYAGE:
From Thursday, May 13 to Sunday, May 16, at Montreal’s Place des Festivals, ATSA, When Art Takes Action presents the third edition of Cuisine Ta Ville: LE GRAND VOYAGE, a trail of masterful installations and outdoor exhibits, as well as online programming comprised of culinary events, conferences and workshops exploring the notions of Journey and Grief as they relate to migratory issues. As the performing arts are prohibited this year, we nonetheless suggest you discover our artists for future reference…
“It is about the way one leaves, and what one leaves behind – family, friends, and a life – in the hopes of a better future. Regardless of how much or how little experience we may have with such journeys or grief, I’m sure the theme will resonate in some way for everyone, because with COVID, we have all, to varying degrees, experienced grieving and mourning of some sort: the grief of no longer seeing our loved ones, of never holding them in our arms again, of losing our established ways of doing things or our work, and having to adapt to a new way of life.”
– Annie Roy, ATSA’s executive and artistic director
The opening ceremony began with a speech by Annie Roy, Executive and artistic director of ATSA, followed by a speech by The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Federal MP for the riding of Laurier–Sainte-Marie and Minister of Canadian Heritage. The Honourable Chantal Rouleau, Québec Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region. Councillor Cathy Wong, City Councillor and Executive Committee member for the Ville-Marie borough, Peter-McGill district. Were also present at the inauguration : Anne-Marie Jean, President and CEO, Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec - Monique Simard, Chair of the Board of Directors, Quartier des Spectacles - Catherine Girard Lantagne, Director of Programming, Quartier des Spectacles - Emilie Thuillier, Borough mayor of Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Executive committee member.
With two past editions to its credit, the latest one having been the recipient of the 2019 YMCA Peace Medal, the third edition of Cuisine Ta Ville, LE GRAND VOYAGE, continues to strengthen the ties between the host society and new arrivals, by giving a platform to people who are going through the integration process, the people helping them, and those who create meaningful works in order to jointly build a better understanding of the underlying issues and to become participants in a society that is open and inclusive of Others. It is a multifaceted event that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the subject matter while respecting current public health safety guidelines.
A TRAIL OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS AND EXHIBITS
The visual leitmotif will be modes of transportation, both real and imaginary. This theme evokes the notion of departure, the manner in which leave and what we leave behind in the hopes of a brighter future. We mourn the loss of our language, our loved ones, sometimes their death in difficult circumstances. We are sure the theme will resonate in some way for everyone, because with COVID, we have all, to varying degrees, experienced grieving and mourning of some sort: the grief of no longer seeing our loved ones, of never holding them in our arms again, of losing our established way of doing things or our work, having to adapt to a new way of life, and so on.
In addition to handling the event decor and design, ATSA has created two new works, Six pieds sous ciel and Marche avec moi. Wearing many hats, ATSA is not only curator, programmer and presenter, but also producer and/or coproducer in order to give the artists an opportunity to create in spite of the pandemic and to be represented along the trail.
The artworks and/or the exhibit supports have been inspired by objects used for transportation: aircraft ailerons, shipping containers, buses, life rafts, bicycles, shoes – even door frames, road signs... The installations and exhibits tell of journeys undertaken for survival, of daily courage, fueled by a longing to fly or to flee, and dreams of a new world onto which hopes are projected.
The trail is comprised of installations by: ATSA, with the pictorial participation of Niap Sanders, Karine Gibouleau, Renaud Philippe, Giorgia Volpe, Maria Escurza, Jinyoung Kim, Ex Muro, Camille Courier, Women Walk the Walk, Atelier MAP, My-Van Dam, Wartin Pantois, Nassima Samadi, Kiran Ambwani, Collectif Partout la poésie, Phil Allard, Maliciouz, Bercers le temps...as well as the launch of the CUISINE TON QUARTIER Podcast Trails.
The unveiling of the CUISINE TON QUARTIER: PODCAST TRAILS capsules is also a launchpad to discovering the wealth of wisdom and experience held by Montreal’s immigrants, those who support them and the participating artists, who are themselves immigrants or who work with immigrants. https://atsa.qc.ca/en/cuisine-ton-quartier-en
PARTY DE CUISINE: In collaboration with restaurateurs Gaëlle Cerf (formerly of Grumman ’78) and Paul Toussaint (of Kamuy), a number of organizations working in the culinary field with immigrants, including Food’elles, Un rêve dans votre assiette and Fais-en pour deux, will share both recipes and life stories. The activity will be filmed and retransmitted via Facebook Live.
FILMS, CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS: Online, a selection of films and conferences with Lilyanne Rachedi, Lenine Nankassa Boucal, Denise Otis and Muriel Bitta, Anne-Marie Bellemare, as well as “DIY” workshops by Ivan Artehortua, Rafaël Benitaz and Maria Ezcurra.
Finally, the Web site for the CUISINE TON QUARTIER Podcast Trails will make its debut on May 13!
