Le Voleur vit en enfer
(1984) 19 min.
A man loses his job and begins a downhill slide. Social aid comes first, followed by a move to a poor neighbourhood. Next, his dubious neighbours begin to affect his mental health. Believing himself prone to hallucination, he decides to film the people around him without their knowing, from his window. Rather than reassuring him, his home movies take him from disarray to full-out psychosis
Quiconque meurt, meurt à douleur
(1997) 90 min.
Followed closely by a TV news cameraman, the police raid a shooting gallery. Things quickly go wrong: the junkies are armed. In the ensuing panic, the cameraman and two officers are taken hostage. The house is quickly surrounded. During the 36 hours of siege that ensue, and until their reserves run out, the besieged force the cameraman to record their version of life.
Hommes à louer
(Qc,2008) 140 min. Rodrigue Jean
The screening will be followed by a discussion in the presence of the director and of protagonists from the film at 7 P.M. at the ONF
Male prostitutes in Montreal confide to Rodrigue Jean’s camera during the course of monthly voluntary encounters with the filmmaker. They talk about the chief risks associated with their trade, often entered to finance their drug habit. The men are liars, yet dignified; they speak of their relationships with their johns, their love affairs and their addictions which run the gamut.
Double bill
Le Barbier
(Qc/Belgium, 2008) 19 min. Julie Descarpentries
For 130 years, the Accueil Bonneau has sheltered, fed and supported street people. Among the dozens of volunteers working there is Roger, a barber who cleans up his clients’ neck hairs and gives back a bit of dignity to the homeless who have been filling his barber’s chair for decades. Broken dreams hinted at, silent solidarity and typical male tact: with simplicity and humour, a profile of a remarkable man.
Jeannot le fou
(Qc, 2008) 75 min. Francis Pinard et Benoit Thomassin
In Saint-Hyacinthe, on the banks of the Yamaska River, Jeannot Caron wants to build the first “hospital of love,” where anyone could receive “care, lodging, food and hugs.” The municipal councillors beg to differ and undertake to thwart this stubborn visionary who has put aside everything else in order to fulfill his messianic dream. “Jeannot le fou,” as he is known, is far from crazy and stops at nothing to achieve his goal.
Dédé à travers les brumes
(Qc, 2009) 139 min. Jean-Philippe Duval
In 1997, André “Dédé“ Fortin retires to the Eastern Townships with his band Les Colocs to record their third album, Dehors Novembre. Faced with band members impatiently awaiting fresh material and going through a romantic break-up, he swings from moments of creative inspiration to periods of despair. Dédé revisits his past: his arrival in Montreal in 1984, his studies in cinema, his encounter with harmonica player and Colocs co-founder Pat Esposito, the band’s shows, the bitterness that followed the 1995 referendum defeat... Despite the huge success of Dehors Novembre, he sinks into depression. On May 8, 2000, he commits suicide in his apartment.
10-50 Un toit, c'est un droit
(Can, 2008) 52 min. HD Henrique Vera-Villanueva.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION 4
East Van: John
(Can,2008) 40 min. Paul Wong
An intimate glimpse of a neighbourhood undergoing transformation. Paul Wong’s video lets us follow a former homeowner in Vancouver’s East Downtown district. It is a story of addiction and poverty. Wong’s recent work has explored the notion of representation while continuing to challenge the objective perspective of the lens.
L'Art en action
by Magnus Isacsson and Simon Bujold
“Art, love and idealism to spare: this is what drives Annie Roy and Pierre Allard, founders, 10 years ago, of Action Terroriste Socialement Acceptable, better known as ATSA. The fight for a more just, dignified and humane society through urban artistic performances involving everyday citizens. Magnus Isacsson’s portrayal is right on the mark, documenting the couple’s complete commitment to the cause and their attempts to balance it with family life; the filmmaker never hides his admiration for these two individuals whose integrity and generosity are exemplary. A documentary that is bold, touching and completely honest, leaving the viewer with a sense of renewed optimism in a better tomorrow.”
