Le square Émilie-Gamelin : un espace malmené
Traditionally, a park is both a place for rest and a space where we can relax in an atmosphere conducive to observation and reflection. Place Émilie-Gamelin, however, is more like an urban no-man’s-land where society’s outcasts stagnate. Far from singing the praises of mobility, Simon Harel explores the meaning of homelessness, of “roaming” when you have nothing and no-one waiting for you, and sees Place Émilie-Gamelin as a space whose vocation must be continuously called into question.

Anne Sainte-Marie, Communications Officer for Amnesty International Canada’s francophone branch since 1994 and member of the research/action team on Winneway.

Algonquins are the poorest of Quebec’s First Nations. Winneway’s Algonquin community has had its lands snatched from it numerous times in the name of industrial development. Today, the community is established on a parcel of land 0.5 km2 in area. 40% of its dwellings are overcrowded. Amnesty International is campaigning so that the Government of Québec resumes negotiations with the community and respects the terms and conditions of the agreement signed in 2008.
