WHAT IS ÉTAT D’URGENCE?
NOVEMBER 26 TO 30, 2008
Place Émilie
Gamelin, Montreal - Metro BERRI-UQAM
État d’Urgence is the 2008 recipient of the Citoyen de la culture Award
given by not-for-profit organization Les Arts et la Ville.
In 1998, ATSA organized its very first État d’Urgence (“State of Emergency”), creating a camp for homeless urban refugees smack dab in Montreal’s downtown core. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the 2008 edition marks its 60th. For the occasion, ATSA has joined forces with Amnesty International. Over the course of five days, this round-the-clock “manifestival,” made possible by the contributions of numerous volunteers, will welcome the homeless and offer free, multidisciplinary engaged-art programming revolving around the 30 articles and preamble of the Declaration.
